[11-28-22] Driver Kills Pedestrian on Haines Road in Saturday Evening Crash

A 40-year-old man behind the wheel of a sedan hit and killed a pedestrian while travelling northbound on Haines Road North, approaching 58th Avenue North, Saturday evening.

The pedestrian, a 42-year-old man who was also from St. Petersburg, “walked across the roadway and into the path of the vehicle,” according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

According to state law, all sides of an intersection are crosswalks, marked or not. Motorists approaching a pedestrian legally crossing the street at an intersection must yield or stop to allow the person to cross. It is currently unclear if the pedestrian was at an intersection or not.

He suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash, which happened at 6:40 p.m.

At least 11 bicyclists, 26 motorcyclists and 31 pedestrians have been killed in Pinellas county this year, according to estimates from Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles published earlier this month.

Last week, crash survivors, families and advocates gathered on the shores of Treasure Island to remember those killed on our roadways and urge elected officials to do more to prevent future heartache. Attendees of the event — which was held on World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims — called for expanded sidewalks, improved streetlighting, reduced speed limits and other measures to make Pinellas streets safer for all.

The driver of the sedan sustained no injuries from Saturday’s crash, according to troopers. Also in the vehicle were two children: an 8-year-old and a 15-year-old. Neither was injured, and all were wearing seatbelts, according to troopers.

CAR ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Car accidents remain a major safety concern across the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 39,345 people died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024. Traffic deaths decreased from 2023, but serious and fatal crashes continue to affect thousands of families each year.

Florida continues to see hundreds of thousands of crashes annually. According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were 381,210 reportable traffic crashes in Florida in 2024. Those crashes resulted in 3,184 deaths.

The problem also affects St. Petersburg and Pinellas County. In 2024, Pinellas County recorded more than 14,000 motor vehicle traffic crashes.

Car accidents can involve two vehicles, several vehicles, pedestrians, motorcycles, or commercial trucks. Multi-vehicle crashes can become especially complicated because more than one driver may share responsibility and several insurance policies may apply.

Common factors that can contribute to serious car accidents include:

  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Impaired driving
  • Reckless or aggressive driving
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Failure to yield
  • Wrong-way driving
  • Following too closely
  • Failure to obey traffic signals or other traffic laws
  • Dangerous weather or road conditions

If you or someone you love has been injured in a crash, a St. Petersburg car accident lawyer can investigate what happened and help determine which parties and insurance policies may be responsible.
