[07-15-26] Police Investigating Fiery U.S. 19 Crash in Tarpon Springs That Left Three Injured

TARPON SPRINGS — Tarpon Springs police are investigating a serious early Tuesday morning crash that left multiple people injured after officers reportedly pulled a woman from a vehicle that caught fire following the collision.

According to the Tarpon Springs Police Department, officers and firefighters responded at approximately 2:25 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, to a two-vehicle crash on southbound U.S. Highway 19 near East Tarpon Avenue.

Investigators said the crash occurred just north of the intersection and involved a red 2022 Hyundai sedan and a silver 2010 Chevrolet SUV.

First responders reportedly rescued a female occupant from the Hyundai after the vehicle caught fire following the crash. She was transported to a local trauma center as a trauma alert. A male occupant of the Hyundai also sustained injuries and was transported to a trauma center as a trauma alert.

A third occupant of the Hyundai suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The three occupants in the Chevy refused transport to the hospital.

The Tarpon Springs Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit responded to the scene and is leading the investigation. Detectives said they have not yet identified who was driving the Hyundai because those involved have provided conflicting statements regarding who was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

The southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 19 at East Tarpon Avenue remain closed while investigators process the scene and crews complete cleanup efforts.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area for the next several hours and seek alternate routes.

CAR ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Car accidents happen all too often in the United States. According to the U.S. Transportation Department, the number of traffic deaths nationwide surged in the first nine months of 2021 to 31,720. The number was 12 percent higher than the same period in 2020 and the highest nine-month figure since 2006.

The bustling cities of Florida are a hotbed for possible car accidents. Highways such as the I-4, US-1, and I-10, are some of the deadliest roadways in Florida and unfortunately provide many opportunities for potentially serious car accidents.

Following the nationwide trend, Florida car accidents have also been on the rise. According to the Florida Highway Patrol and Motor Vehicles database, statewide fatalities from crashes were up nearly 10 percent from 3,332 fatalities in 2020 to 3,629 in 2021. It was also ranked third most dangerous state to drive in, according to a report by Uplift Legal Funding.

There are many different types of car accidents, but multi-vehicle accidents are one of them. When two or more cars come together, accidents like this happen all the time. You have a good chance that three vehicles will be hit when two vehicles hit each other.

A variety of factors caused these collisions. Distracted driving, speeding, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, driving in bad weather, driving the wrong way, and failing to obey traffic laws are examples of dangerous behaviors.
