[04-06-26] Half-Full Bottle of Tequila Found in Car After I-275 Crash

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Lakeland woman is facing multiple felony charges after a crash on Interstate 275 in Tampa ended in a violent arrest.

Alexis McCants, 23, was involved in a reported hit-and-run crash on southbound I-275 at around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 4.

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash, and troopers arrived to find a Toyota RAV4 with damage to its back-left side and a Ford Fusion with heavy front-end damage. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.

Witnesses said the Ford was traveling at very high speeds and was weaving in and out of traffic, according to a report from FHP.

Officers later found a half-full bottle of tequila in the passenger seat of her car, and the report said troopers could smell alcohol on her. The results of her blood-alcohol test were pending.

McCants told one of the troopers that the other vehicle had cut her off, causing her to collide with it and lose control of her car.

As the officers tried to speak with her, she became increasingly distressed, and at one point began walking toward active lanes of traffic “in an aggressive manner.”

Troopers tried to hold her back, but she fought back, striking the officers and cutting one of their hands. She continued resisting and was tased twice before troopers were able to detain her in the back of a patrol car.

McCants, still resisting, needed to be restrained to a stretcher to allow EMS to evaluate her for injuries. She was taken to the hospital, and a Baker Act was placed due to the threats she made against her life.

Later that day, she was booked into the Falkenburg Road Jail and charged with three counts of resisting an officer with violence, two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, and reckless driving.

CAR ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Car accidents happen all too often in the United States. According to the U.S. Transportation Department, the number of traffic deaths nationwide surged in the first nine months of 2021 to 31,720. The number was 12 percent higher than the same period in 2020 and the highest nine-month figure since 2006.

The bustling cities of Florida are a hotbed for possible car accidents. Highways such as the I-4, US-1, and I-10, are some of the deadliest roadways in Florida and unfortunately provide many opportunities for potentially serious car accidents.

Following the nationwide trend, Florida car accidents have also been on the rise. According to the Florida Highway Patrol and Motor Vehicles database, statewide fatalities from crashes were up nearly 10 percent from 3,332 fatalities in 2020 to 3,629 in 2021. It was also ranked third most dangerous state to drive in, according to a report by Uplift Legal Funding.

There are many different types of car accidents, but multi-vehicle accidents are one of them. When two or more cars come together, accidents like this happen all the time. You have a good chance that three vehicles will be hit when two vehicles hit each other.

A variety of factors caused these collisions. Distracted driving, speeding, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, driving in bad weather, driving the wrong way, and failing to obey traffic laws are examples of dangerous behaviors.
