BRADENTON, Fla. — The Bradenton Police Department (BPD) said it has arrested the suspected driver behind a fatal hit-and-run crash.
Police said the incident happened at around 1 p.m. on May 1 in the 5600 block of 11th Avenue West.
Vicki Noon, 77, was in the yard of her home when a vehicle veered off the road and struck her, BPD said.
The driver took off, according to officers.
Karen Wilson said Noon was checking her mail when she was killed. She said her husband heard the crash.
“He came in and got me and we went over and checked her pulse, called 911 and we didn’t see the car, we just heard a squeal,” said Karen Wilson, a neighbor.
Wilson said she has known Noon for about 15 years.
“Lovely lady. She was an old ICU nurse,” said Wilson.
“It makes me very upset because she was a wonderful, wonderful woman and we’ve known her for years.”
Police released an image of a Honda Accord and hours later, police located the vehicle.
A sergeant who was driving in the neighborhood found the suspected vehicle within walking distance of the crash.
“We had a great picture of the vehicle that was taken from someone’s camera and working from that we were able to send that out to all our officers and immediately, all of our officers started driving down roads and looking at cars that could match that description,” said Meredith Censullo with the Bradenton Police Department.
The driver, Jordan Beard, 40, was at a residence in the 7200 block of 13th Avenue West and was arrested, BPD said.
Police said he cooperated with detectives.
Beard is being booked into the Manatee County jail. He faces a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
On Saturday, BPD said Beard is also being charged with DUI manslaughter and tampering with evidence
Police said additional charges may be pending following an investigation.
