[06-14-24] St. Pete Hit-And-Run Destroys Fire Hydrant, Sends Truck Into Sea Wall

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — Cameras captured a hit-and-run in St. Petersburg that destroyed a fire hydrant and sent a truck crashing into a sea wall.

The terrifying incident was caught on camera, as two vehicles came flying through Codi Klotz’s front lawn.

“Definitely very concerning,” he said. “If I had children or even walking the pups, somebody coming at that speed is very concerning.”

A neighbor’s security camera shows a black SUV and white pickup truck racing down 87th Avenue North.

Then things escalate.

“The black SUV somehow cuts off, or hits and causes it to spin out of control, and then the black vehicle just leaves the scene,” said Yolanda Fernandez with the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Police said as the white truck lost control, it hit a fire hydrant and then sea wall.

The SUV then cut back through the yard and drove away.

“Right now this is a hit-and-run crash and it did cause damage to the white pickup truck,” Fernandez said. “That victim does want to press charges.”

Klotz had several white rocks lining his yard so something like this wouldn’t happen.

Neighbors said they’re frustrated. Moving forward, they want change.

“What do we want as neighbors? We would like one, people to slow down, and two, we would like speed bumps,” Tisha Lecouve said.

“Definitely a little frustrated,” Klotz said. “Would like to see some speed bumps or stop signs or something done from the city to help mitigate this issue moving forward.”

“I think this road probably needs a few speed humps,” Erin Banks said. “I don’t know that a stop sign around here would do any good because people just don’t stop anyhow.”
