HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A midday collision on Friday ended in two fatalities and left two others injured after a driver went through a red light at a busy intersection, state troopers reported.
The crash happened at approximately 12:50 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 60 and North Turkey Creek Road. According to investigators from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 59-year-old Plant City woman was driving a Chevy Cobalt northbound on North Turkey Creek Road. As she approached SR-60, she entered the intersection despite a red traffic signal.
The Chevy Cobalt drove directly into the path of a Dodge Journey that was traveling eastbound on SR-60, driven by a 71-year-old woman from Sebring. The Dodge Journey rammed into the side of the Chevy Cobalt, sending both vehicles spinning across the roadway.
The force of the initial impact shoved the Chevy Cobalt all the way to the northeast corner of the intersection, where it collided with a nearby shed. Meanwhile, the Dodge Journey traveled northeast and crashed into a third vehicle.
That car, a Kia K5 driven by a 20-year-old Plant City woman, had been completely stopped in the westbound left-turn lane of SR-60 waiting for the light.
The 59-year-old driver of the Chevy Cobalt and her passenger, a 59-year-old woman from Dover, both suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The driver of the Dodge Journey and the driver of the Kia K5 survived the multi-car wreck, escaping with only minor injuries. The Florida Highway Patrol has not released any additional information regarding the identities of those involved as the investigation continues.
