A late-afternoon crash on US 41 left two people dead and another hurt after a Tampa driver struck a Toyota Camry, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say the Nissan Pathfinder driven by 21-year-old Navesh Persaud was heading north around 5:45 p.m. Sunday when the collision happened north of Debuel Road.
What troopers say happened on US 41
Investigators said Persaud passed a Camry traveling ahead of him and then crashed into it. After impact, both vehicles spun before coming to rest along the roadway.
The crash scene drew a fatal response from state troopers as the evening traffic corridor was shut down long enough for investigators to sort out the sequence of events.
Who died and who survived
The driver of the Camry, a 53-year-old man from Land O’Lakes, died at the scene. A 60-year-old woman from Lutz, who was riding in the car, also died there, troopers said.
A second passenger, a 55-year-old Land O’Lakes man, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
Why charges were filed after the crash
Officials said Persaud was arrested after he was released from a hospital. He faces two counts of DUI manslaughter and one count of DUI serious injury.
Authorities have not said what specific impairment they believe played a role in the collision, and the names of the people killed have not yet been released.
What remains under investigation
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to handle the case, relying on its crash report to outline the suspected sequence of events and the criminal charges.
