[08-10-26] DUI Driver Causes Wrong-Way Crash on I-75 in Riverview

RIVERVIEW, Fla. (WFLA) — A 27-year-old Wimauma man is behind bars after the Florida Highway Patrol said he went the wrong way down I-75 and struck another car head-on.

Troopers responded to the scene at around 3 a.m. on August 7, after reports came in of a dark SUV traveling south in the northbound lanes near mile marker 250.

Shortly after the reports came in, the SUV, a Chevy Traverse, collided head-on with another driver, an arrest affidavit said.

The Chevy had serious damage to the front left corner and the driver’s side, and both driver-side wheels were destroyed. The trooper wrote in the arrest report that they could tell the car was still on and in drive because the front-left axle was still spinning.

The driver was identified as 27-year-old Ceasar Aguirre Jr., and a witness confirmed he was the only person in the car at the time of the crash.

The car he struck, a Honda Accord, had sustained damage to the front-driver’s side, and the Bradenton man driving suffered non-life-threatening injuries, FHP said.

When the trooper spoke with Aguirre, he noted bloodshot, glossy eyes and the smell of alcohol on his breath.

Aguirre first claimed his brother was the one driving, but ran off, and later said it was his wife who was driving, but also ran off.

He told law enforcement that he was coming from a Bradenton restaurant, but couldn’t remember which one, and had been drinking, but couldn’t remember how much. He refused field sobriety and breath tests, the trooper wrote in the affidavit.

Aguirre was arrested and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail later Friday morning. He was charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to testing.

CAR ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Car accidents happen all too often in the United States. According to the U.S. Transportation Department, the number of traffic deaths nationwide surged in the first nine months of 2021 to 31,720. The number was 12 percent higher than the same period in 2020 and the highest nine-month figure since 2006.

The bustling cities of Florida are a hotbed for possible car accidents. Highways such as the I-4, US-1, and I-10, are some of the deadliest roadways in Florida and unfortunately provide many opportunities for potentially serious car accidents.

Following the nationwide trend, Florida car accidents have also been on the rise. According to the Florida Highway Patrol and Motor Vehicles database, statewide fatalities from crashes were up nearly 10 percent from 3,332 fatalities in 2020 to 3,629 in 2021. It was also ranked third most dangerous state to drive in, according to a report by Uplift Legal Funding.

There are many different types of car accidents, but multi-vehicle accidents are one of them. When two or more cars come together, accidents like this happen all the time. You have a good chance that three vehicles will be hit when two vehicles hit each other.

A variety of factors caused these collisions. Distracted driving, speeding, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, driving in bad weather, driving the wrong way, and failing to obey traffic laws are examples of dangerous behaviors.
