RIVERVIEW, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said a man involved in a Fourth of July crash has been located and arrested.
At around 4:50 a.m. on Friday, officers responded to a call reporting a crash near Providence Road and Bloomingdale Avenue. Upon arrival, they found one driver dead, a 19-year-old woman, and learned the other driver had fled the area on foot.
HCSO said the preliminary investigation indicated the victim was driving on Providence Road when she was struck by a vehicle traveling on Bloomingdale Avenue that had run a red light at a high speed.
The suspect, Roberto Carlos Meza Rosales, 21, was located by detectives a few hours later and admitted to fleeing the scene, HCSO said. He showed signs of impairment, and authorities said they believe alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash.
The sheriff’s office said Meza Rosales came to the U.S. illegally in 2018 and that they are coordinating with Customs and Border Protection regarding his immigration status.
He has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, which is a first-degree felony.
