TAMPA — A man in his 30s was killed Thursday morning after a violent two-vehicle crash on North Florida Avenue, according to the Tampa Police Department.
Officers responded at approximately 7:13 a.m. to the 11600 block of North Florida Avenue following reports of a serious crash involving a 2022 Tesla and a 2024 Volkswagen.
According to preliminary investigators, the blue Tesla was traveling northbound on North Florida Avenue at what police described as a high rate of speed as the Volkswagen was traveling southbound and attempting to make a left turn into a local dealership. The Tesla struck the passenger side of the Volkswagen, causing the SUV to overturn.
The driver and only occupant of the Volkswagen, a man believed to be in his mid-30s, suffered critical injuries. Officers immediately began life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and sole occupant of the Tesla, a man in his early 20s, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
The crash closed the northbound lanes of North Florida Avenue between Fowler Avenue and Bougainvillea Avenue for several hours while investigators documented the scene and collected evidence. The roadway has since reopened.
The investigation remains active as detectives work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether speed was a contributing factor and whether any criminal charges will be filed.
