TAMPA, Fla. – A man is dead and a woman is fighting for her life following a tragic accident late Sunday night on North Florida Avenue. The Tampa Police Department is currently investigating the crash, which occurred around 9:49 pm near the intersection of East Ohio Avenue.
According to preliminary evidence, a man in his mid-60s was helping a woman in her early 50s by pushing her wheelchair across the street.
The pair was crossing from east to west in a section of the road that was poorly lit and lacked a designated crosswalk. As they moved across the lanes, they were struck by a 2005 Volvo traveling northbound.
First responders arrived on the scene quickly and transported both victims to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival. The woman remains in critical condition.
The driver of the Volvo, a woman in her early 30s, stayed at the scene and has been fully cooperative with investigators. Police have already determined that speed was not a factor in the collision and stated there were no signs of driver impairment.
While the investigation into the crash is ongoing, authorities noted that no citations have been issued and no criminal charges are expected at this stage.
“Our thoughts go out to the families and loved ones of those affected by this tragic incident,” the department said in a statement.
