A 20-year-old man behind the wheel of an SUV struck and killed a 40-year-old woman from Riverview as she walked across U.S. 19 in Pasco County late Saturday night, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
The driver, from Hudson, was traveling southbound with a 21-year-old passenger. Both were wearing seatbelts and neither suffered injuries, according to troopers.
The woman was walking westbound across the highway at 10:50 p.m. at the intersection of New York Avenue when the driver hit her. She suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash, according to troopers.
Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson Sergeant Steve Gaskins said since the case remains under investigation, he is not prepared to say whether the SUV had a green light at the intersection.
Regardless, according to state law, motorists must yield to a pedestrian who is already in an intersection crosswalk. In Florida, pedestrians are allowed to cross the street at any intersection, whether a crosswalk is marked or unmarked.
