[05-23-26] Motorcyclist Killed in Crash With Dump Truck at US 41 and I-275 Ramp in Manatee County

A motorcyclist was killed Thursday afternoon in a crash involving a semi dump truck at the intersection of US 41 and the southbound entrance ramp to Interstate 275 in Manatee County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:20 p.m. on May 21, 2026, near mile marker 2 of I-275.

According to investigators, a 2019 Kenworth semi dump truck, driven by a 59-year-old North Port man, was stopped in the southbound left-turn lane on US 41 at the southbound I-275 entrance ramp intersection.

At the same time, a 2025 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling northbound on US 41 approaching the intersection. Troopers say the semi truck entered the intersection and began turning left toward the southbound entrance ramp to I-275 when the motorcycle entered the same intersection.

The front of the motorcycle collided with the right side of the dump truck.

The motorcyclist, described only as an adult male pending positive identification, was wearing a helmet and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the dump truck was not injured.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the investigation remains ongoing as investigators work to determine the status of the traffic signal and the speeds of both vehicles at the time of the crash.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Motorcycle crashes continue to cause a disproportionate number of serious and fatal injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6,228 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024. Motorcyclists accounted for 16% of all traffic fatalities that year.

The risks are especially serious in Florida. According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, 589 motorcyclists were killed in Florida traffic crashes in 2024. Motorcycle fatalities accounted for approximately 18.5% of all traffic deaths in the state that year.

Motorcyclists are also much more vulnerable than people traveling in passenger vehicles. Based on vehicle miles traveled in 2024, NHTSA reports that motorcyclists were almost 27 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash and almost five times more likely to be injured.

For riders in St. Petersburg and throughout Pinellas County, crashes can happen when drivers fail to notice motorcycles or leave riders enough space. Common factors that can contribute to motorcycle accidents include:

  • Drivers making unsafe left turns
  • Failure to yield
  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Impaired driving
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Following too closely
  • Wrong-way driving
  • Failure to obey traffic signals or other traffic laws
  • Dangerous road or weather conditions

If you or someone you love has been injured in a motorcycle crash, a St. Petersburg motorcycle accident attorney can investigate what happened and help determine who may be responsible.
