[09-05-26] Riverview Man Arrested After Fleeing Serious-Injury Motorcycle Crash

A Riverview man was arrested after authorities say he fled the scene of a crash that left a motorcyclist seriously injured Thursday morning in Hillsborough County.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. on September 3, 2026, on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, east of Chastain Road.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Ford Fusion driven by 45-year-old Bobby Mwaten of Riverview was traveling westbound on the north shoulder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. At the same time, a Suzuki motorcycle operated by a 25-year-old Valrico woman was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane while legally passing vehicles on the left along the two-lane roadway.

Troopers say Mwaten attempted to make an improper U-turn from the shoulder and failed to observe and yield the right-of-way to the approaching motorcycle. The front of the Ford collided with the front of the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Following the crash, FHP says Mwaten fled the scene and drove to 1368 East Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies soon located and detained him.

Investigators say Mwaten had removed the Ford’s license plate and concealed it inside a backpack. Troopers also determined the vehicle was unregistered.

Mwaten was subsequently arrested by FHP troopers on charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, tampering with evidence, driving an unregistered motor vehicle and making an improper U-turn.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Motorcycle crashes continue to cause a disproportionate number of serious and fatal injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6,228 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024. Motorcyclists accounted for 16% of all traffic fatalities that year.

The risks are especially serious in Florida. According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, 589 motorcyclists were killed in Florida traffic crashes in 2024. Motorcycle fatalities accounted for approximately 18.5% of all traffic deaths in the state that year.

Motorcyclists are also much more vulnerable than people traveling in passenger vehicles. Based on vehicle miles traveled in 2024, NHTSA reports that motorcyclists were almost 27 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash and almost five times more likely to be injured.

For riders in St. Petersburg and throughout Pinellas County, crashes can happen when drivers fail to notice motorcycles or leave riders enough space. Common factors that can contribute to motorcycle accidents include:

  • Drivers making unsafe left turns
  • Failure to yield
  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Impaired driving
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Following too closely
  • Wrong-way driving
  • Failure to obey traffic signals or other traffic laws
  • Dangerous road or weather conditions

If you or someone you love has been injured in a motorcycle crash, a St. Petersburg motorcycle accident attorney can investigate what happened and help determine who may be responsible.
